Sun from Both Sides

Love Pie
Photograph by: Karen Holmes

"To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides."
-David Viscott

A while ago I had this idea that I wanted to learn to make a really good pie crust - you know, that melt-in-your-mouth memorable pie crust that joins with butter and apples and speaks fluent American. So I focused on pie making, and then I decided to go a little further and focus on the two pies my sons love: French Apple and Lemon Meringue. Over many cheerful sessions, flour floated and drifted like snow all over counter tops and kissed my cheeks as I rolled out various versions of dough. Resolutely, I held on to the pleasure of my focus. I not only learned to create a better crust, I also began a family tradition. Who could have known that the simple act of making pie could teach me so much about the joy of focus and "feeling the sun from both sides"...

Wishing you the pleasure of focus...
feeling the sun from both sides...

I have been perched in your kitchen and have watched you loving prepare your special pies. I know your boys have benefited from your loving touch with your pies throughout their lives. It is the sweetness of your graceful hands as you mold the warm ingredients together that add to the prospect of a slice with warm tea. Truly love the heart in the lemon filling, adds to the "YUMMY-ness" of the picture!

Mmmm this made me yearn for the pies I once made. It has been far too long since I have rolled out pie crust and pinched the edges. Coconut Cream Pie sounds especially yummy to me today! Thanks!

There's a wonderful birding B&B in sounthern Arizona in the mountians near the border. The amazing gourmet chef/owners, Patrick and Karl, provide endless pies as one of the guest amenities. These are placed with love, fresh and piping hot, throughout the day on the ancient oak sideboard . When I was there last year, there were (and I ate more than my fair share of) sugar pie and blackberry pie and coconut cream pie. Our second day there, in the frosty morning, the weather wasn't exactly birding weather - at least for this Africa-FL girl. The quote of the day by those who braved the cold was recorded later as being, "But we saw lots of birds and there wasn't any snow on the picnic table where we ate"!! I stayed at the Inn that day, and ate pie and watched lovely, local birds scramble for their allotment of daily seed on the frozen feeder just outside the warm, cozy dining room.

That was a "sun on one side" day, I think. The snow could have really ruined my 'plans', but choosing instead to bask in the sun which there was in abundance inside by the pie, gave me a memorable, comfortable day. Sometimes we love but are not loved in return. In the loving tho, there is sunshine to be found.
Exploring this truth more deeply each day,
Simply offered by one who is learning to at least enjoy the sun there is, on the one side

*betsy... thank you for sharing your heartfelt message... makes me want to explore birding, and eat some pie! love exists in so many places... perhaps it is like birding: you need to keep an eye out for it...and enjoy what comes into view. -xok.
