100 Pennies

Pennies of Hope

"Few people know so clearly what they want.
Most people can't even think what to hope for when
they throw a penny in a fountain."

-Barbara Kingsolver

Next time you think to toss a small penny into a fountain's waters... you might take a moment to glance at the inscription cast therein, and notice the curved etching of the "In God We Trust"... and maybe you will also notice an unspoken gratefulness in your heart for our country and for those who call this place home...

Or... perhaps like me, you will now also remember the kind woman on the evening news who within the clutch of her tiny aged hand held a single worn and crumpled dollar bill that she had found amongst the post-tornado rubble of her entirely demolished Missouri home... she was in her home at the time of the rampaging tornado's torment and mass destruction... but she had survived...with her hair askew and the shock of it all still fraying the edges of her speech, she held up her valuable dollar bill to the camera...and there in her hollow, weathered face a small smile of gratitude lifted the edges of her soul...why?... these are what I remember of her words, "each penny means an angel is watching over you...and I have found 100 in this dollar bill... 100 angels have been watching over me..."

Indeed, she had been divinely protected...

My heart and prayers go out to all of those who are being touched so deeply and profoundly by the tornado devastation... the rebuilding will be long and take courage and support...and trust...and hope...

Of course, my hope is for a hundred pennies...for each one of them...

When my daughter was little, we would be walking along and see a penny and I would say" YES (loudly), I just got kissed by an angel!" So many times we would both see a forgotten penny and rush in to get the kiss. One day she asked me" why doesn't everyone want these kisses?" I told her because we wanted them more. God gave the woman 100 pennies because she wanted it more. My daughter and I still compete to get a kiss from an Angel, and I hope we never stop!
thanks for reminding me the gift of a penny! Xoxo

*this is from betsy (we seem to be having some blog posting concerns right now...betsy tried to post this and then sent it to me...i wanted to share it with others..)

"I watched the same news report and was also touched by this woman Even as the reality of her crumpled life surrounded her, she - weary but also triumphant - held up that crumpled dollar bill and claimed, instead of grief and loss, 100 times worth of angels' protection! May we each have such faith and courage for whatever faces us this day and in the days - or daze, as it sometime seems - to come!
Blessings, Betsy

Dear Karen,
Your post was wonderfully written and you're so right about the blessings!

Thank you for your visit earlier this morning. I will let you know if I find out how to 'back up' my blog. It sounds like a good idea if one can figure out how to do it. Trouble is, I don't have access to the dashboard to see what my friends are posting.
Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Blessings,
Sandi

Thank you for getting this posted. It is so important and has so much value, because of what it says to us.

I'm going to be checking fountains, and throwing many, many pennies into them.

I too think the lady may been someone that God used to get our attention. He often does, you know.

God bless, my dear.
